Heat Pump Blows Cold When the Heat Is On in Lee County, FL?
Your heat pump should blow hot when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. Sometimes, it’ll stick in one position, continually blowing cold air when you want heat. Read on to learn some reasons it could be stuck blowing cold air at your home in Lee County, FL.
The Evaporator Coil Freezes
Several things can cause a heat pump’s evaporator coil to freeze. Poor airflow and a refrigerant leak are the two most common. Keep in mind that when most modern heat pumps freeze, they enter defrosting mode, and a defrosting heat pump blows cold air for a short time.
It’s Leaking Refrigerant
Even if the leak doesn’t cause the evaporator coil to freeze, leaking refrigerant interferes with heat transfer. That will usually cause the heat pump to blow cold air instead of warm. Repairing such a leak requires an expert.
The Reversing Valve Is Faulty
The reversing valve is what switches your heat pump between heating and cooling mode. If something goes wrong with the reversing valve, then it can either stick in one mode or the other or switch back and forth when it shouldn’t.
It Just Seems Cooler
Furnaces blow air that is generally between 110 degrees and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so the air coming from them feels very warm. Conversely, heat pumps blow air that is between 85 degrees and 92 degrees Fahrenheit, so if you’re used to feeling air from a furnace, then feeling air from a heat pump will feel cold in comparison.
