4 Signs of a Bad Heat Pump Compressor in Charlotte County, FL

A motor runs your heat pump’s compressor, and if the motor fails, so does the compressor. If not caught in time, a bad compressor can lead to a refrigerant leak, which can then lead to freezing of the coils and a total shutdown of the heat pump. Here are four telltale signs that you have a bad heat pump compressor in Charlotte County, FL.

1. Compressor Fails to Turn on

A bad compressor may fail to turn on completely. This occurs when the motor breaks completely or there is a serious refrigerant leak that results in auto-shutoff. Sometimes, the failure of the compressor to turn on is a result of thermostat settings.

If your thermostat settings are right but the compressor still stays off, allow a technician to inspect it. Depending on the problem, the technician will recommend repair or replacement.

2. Unusual Noises From the Compressor

The compressor and the fan make minimal noise during operation. If the unit starts rumbling, banging, vibrating or making a popping sound, it means there’s a broken or loose component or the compressor has an electrical problem. Vibration, for instance, can mean the compressor has a starting problem and is about to fail.

3. Circuit Breaker Tripping

Circuit breakers protect your home from potential fires. If the breaker keeps tripping, it’s a sign that the compressor needs too much power to start. If the breaker is hot, you shouldn’t switch the heat pump back on; instead, call a heat pump expert to inspect the system.

4. Leaks Around the Compressor

A bad compressor can result in refrigerant leaks. If you see puddles or moisture anywhere near the compressor, it might be the AC refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks are hazardous to your health and can cause irritated eyes, headaches and nausea.

If you see any of the above signs or your system won’t heat or cool your home, let a professional help you. Call our Spectrum Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Inc.’s experts for air conditioning services, heating tune-ups and indoor air quality inspections in Charlotte County, FL.
